Baltic Solidarity Projects 2009
 

This project offers the opportunity for self giving and enrichment in the formerly Soviet-occupied Baltic countries of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, which today forms the eastern frontier of the European Union

Aimed at young men of university age who want to make a difference, develop leadership qualities and expand their cultural horizons.

 
Lithuania (June 25 – July 8)
    

Service Assignment This project involves working as an English teacher, coach and counselor on a camp for sixty Baltic boys aged between 12 and 16. The camp will take place near the city of Kaunas which is located about 60 miles north west of the capital Vilnius. An introductory session will be held in the capital of Vilnius which will include training in pedagogy and leadership as well as some initial preparation and planning of the camp activities.
 

Cultural visits: former KGB headquarters (“Museum of Genocide”); Vilnius Old Town; possible trip to the Hill of Crosses and Šiluva (site of a Marian apparition in 1608).
 
Latvia (July 10 – 24)

Service Assignment: Join a team of international volunteers which aims to assist an orphanage in rural Latvia. Activities will focus on catering for the practical needs of the orphanage such as chopping wood for the winter, simple landscaping, building repairs and general improvements. Personal interaction with the residents of the orphanage is also a key part of this service experience.

Cultural visits: Riga Old Town, Baltic nature, and historical sites.

   


The Baltic Solidarity Project 2009 is coordinated by Liepkiemis Study Center (Vilnius), in association with other Baltic youth organizations: Aukštakalnis (Kaunas), Sauleskalns (Riga), and Alfaklubi (Tallinn).
